You may have heard of micro needling (also known as skin needling), but feel nervous about jumping into a Dermapen treatment. Or you may have never heard of it at all. We get it, needles sound daunting, but rest assured it’s all extremely safe, pain-free (the “micro” stands for microscopic!), and non-invasive, not to mention one of the most popular skin treatments in the world for treating signs of ageing, scars, pigmentation and more.

What exactly is microneedling?

Microneedling has been used for decades by dermatologists for treating scars, but in recent years has become popular for treating wrinkles, pigmentation, stretch marks, acne scars, large pores and more thanks to its ability to rejuvenate the skin. The process uses a pen-shaped tool to deliver teeny tiny punctures to the top layers of the skin, using very fast-moving needles in a stamping motion.

This stimulates the natural healing process in the skin, resulting in the production of new collagen and elastin, giving a rejuvenated, clearer and more youthful complexion. To help with this process, solutions containing active vitamins, antioxidants and nourishing, collagen-boosting ingredients are applied during the treatment, which penetrates the deeper layers of the skin through the tiny channels to maximise your skin benefits.

What is Dermapen, and how is it different to traditional micro needling?

Dermapen is the original automated microneedling device and brand for this treatment. Advances in technology over the past decade, combined with millions of dollars and years of research, means the latest version of this device – the Dermapen4 – is now safer and better than ever. Think of it as the Maserati of microneedling devices! The Dermapen4 has an anti-contamination mechanism, advanced oscillating needle technology (meaning more needles with a faster speed, and minimum pain), a unique scar setting and a number of other benefits.

But if that sounds confusing, don’t worry, as it’s your highly skilled and experienced skin specialist who will be doing the treatment on you. If you’re wanting superior results, choose a Puravida Beauty therapist who is a Dermapen Authorised Treatment Provider, meaning they use the trusted and most advanced Dermapen device, rather than cheaper (and sometimes dangerous) low-quality devices.

What happens during an actual Dermapen treatment?

During a treatment, after your skin has been cleansed, exfoliated and sanitised, you’ll have solutions applied to your face (or other areas you’re treating) containing vitamins, hyaluronic acid and other nurturing ingredients to improve the skin. Your therapist will then use the Dermapen4 device to glide over your skin in a crosshatch type pattern, where the tiny needles work in a very fast stamping action on the top layers of the skin. The purpose is to create micro “channels”, which will allow the ingredients to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, as well as stimulating the skin’s healing process to create fresh new collagen and elastin.

The actual needling part of the treatment should only take around ten to twenty minutes, but the whole appointment will need up to an hour with your consultation and soothing DP Dermaceuticals Hyla-Active Face Mask when it’s done. The result? Plump, glowing skin for the next few days (after a little pinkness to begin with), with continued improvements over the next few months as your skin, rejuvenates with new collagen and a revitalised complexion.

Why do I need a series of treatments?

You’ll need multiple (between 3 to 6) treatments to see the full results of micro needling because each session will help to create new layers of collagen and elastin. Therefore a course of treatments will give you best results. The amount of treatments you need generally depends on

  • which skin area you want to treat
  • and what you want to achieve.

Deep wrinkles or scars may require 4 to 6 treatments for optimal results, whereas pigmentation and rejuvenation may only need 3 treatments.
